FAQ

Everything people ask before subscribing

Direct answers about how Lapse works, what data it collects, and how your privacy is protected.

General

What does Lapse actually do?

Lapse runs quietly in the background and notices when your attention shifts - when you meant to stay in one app but ended up somewhere else. It tracks transitions between apps, not the content inside them. Think of it as a mirror for your attention: it shows you where your time actually goes so you can make better choices about how you spend it.

How is Lapse different from Screen Time or other time trackers?

Most tools count hours per app. Lapse tracks drift - the chain of events where you open Slack to check a message and somehow end up on Twitter twenty minutes later. It understands the difference between intentional app use and unintentional detours, which is something a simple hour counter can't do.

Does Lapse block apps or restrict my usage?

No. Lapse will never lock you out of an app or nag you with popups. It's built on the principle that awareness is more sustainable than willpower. You see the patterns, you decide what to do about them.

What platforms does Lapse support?

Lapse desktop is available now for macOS and Windows. iOS and Android are in progress.

Do I need to pay before downloading?

No. Desktop installers are public. Download first, sign in, and then start your free trial or subscription to unlock account access.

How does pricing work?

Lapse offers a 7-day free trial so you can try it risk-free. After trial, choose a monthly plan at $5.99/mo or yearly at $39.99/yr (save 44%).

Web and desktop subscriptions are account-based through Lapse checkout. Mobile subscriptions (when iOS/Android apps launch) may also be offered in-app through App Store or Google Play billing.

Privacy & Data

What data does Lapse collect?

Only the minimum needed to show you your attention patterns:

  • App identity: The name and ID of whichever app is in the foreground. Nothing about what's inside it.
  • Timing: When an app was active, how long you used it, and whether your device was idle.
  • Device info: A generated device ID and your platform (macOS or Windows) so you can track across machines.
  • Your edits: Any custom categories, labels, or manual corrections you make to your timeline.

What does Lapse NOT collect?

  • No screenshots, screen recordings, or audio
  • No keystrokes or text input
  • No document, message, or email content
  • No browser URLs or page content
  • No location data

Lapse sees that you switched to Chrome. It has no idea what you looked at.

Where is my data stored?

Your data lives locally first in a database on your machine. If you sign in, a minimal set of timing data syncs securely to your account so you can access insights across devices. Idle time stays local unless you've manually edited it.

Does data leave my device?

Yes. Lapse requires an account, so app identity and timing data sync securely over HTTPS. Lapse never transmits content such as keystrokes, messages, documents, screenshots, or URLs.

Who can see my data?

Only you. There is no anonymous telemetry, no usage analytics piped back to us, and no sharing by default. Your attention data is yours.

Is my data sold or shared with third parties?

No. Your data is never sold, never shared with advertisers, and never used to build profiles for anyone other than you.

Can my employer see my Lapse data?

No. Lapse is a personal tool. There is no admin dashboard, no team reporting, and no way for anyone else to access your data unless you explicitly grant it.

How do I delete my data?

You have full control:

  • Local data: Delete the app's data folder on your machine and it's gone.
  • Synced data: Remove your account to delete all synced history.
  • Quit the app at any time to stop tracking entirely.
  • Data deletion/GDPR requests: Email [email protected] and we'll process your request.

What happens when I edit or delete entries?

Your manual edits always take priority over automatically tracked data. If you delete an entry locally, it's also removed from your synced account on the next sync.

How is my data protected in transit?

All sync traffic is sent over HTTPS. Data is only transmitted when you're signed in, using a short-lived authentication token.
